Here, you will face boards generated with the absolute minimum number of mathematical "givens," forcing you into deep chains of deductive reasoning.
What Makes a Sudoku "Diabolical"?
In the Sudoku community, an "Expert" or "Diabolical" puzzle is defined by the necessity of complex chain logic. While easier puzzles can be solved by looking at a single row or 3x3 block, expert puzzles require you to view the entire 81-cell grid as a unified, interconnected web.
You will frequently encounter situations where standard techniques yield zero progress. Instead, you must rely entirely on our precise Smart Notes system to map out advanced permutations.
The XYZ-Wing Technique
An evolution of the Y-Wing. You must locate three cells: a "hinge" cell containing exactly three candidate numbers (e.g., 1, 2, 3), and two "pincer" cells that share a row, column, or block with the hinge. One pincer has candidates (1, 2) and the other has (1, 3). Through pure deductive logic, you can prove that any cell intersecting all three of these cells cannot possibly contain the number 1, allowing you to purge it from your notes.
Forcing Chains & Nishio
When the board completely locks up, experts use Forcing Chains. Pick a cell with two pencil notes. Assume one is correct, and follow the logical chain of cause-and-effect across the board. If that assumption leads to an impossible contradiction (like two 5s in a row), you have mathematically proven that your initial assumption was false, allowing you to confidently place the other number.
The Jellyfish
A terrifyingly complex pattern involving four rows and four columns. If a candidate number is restricted to exactly the same four columns across four different rows, you can safely eliminate that candidate from every other cell in those four columns. Our "Number Highlight" feature is indispensable for spotting the tentacles of a Jellyfish.
